Poetry events in Memphis!

For you poetry-hungry Memphis folks, check out one or both of these great poetry events in town this week.

Mary Leader will be reading at the University of Memphis in the University Center River Room (Room 300) at 8pm this evening. Free and open to the public. A book signing will follow.

As part of 100 Thousand Poets for Change, poets Heather Dobbins-Combs, Bobby Rogers, Whit Griffin, Corey Mesler, Mary Burns, and John Reed will be reading from 6:30-9:30 P.M. at Java Cabana Coffeehouse, 2170 Young Avenue. This event will have a $5 suggested donation. All funds benefit the Lowenstein House.

  1. Ah, I’ve had a copy of Paper Anniversary for Rogers to sign since last year! Great work, and wonderful to read a poet who writes about this area.

@Renee, Rogers was teaching when I was at Union, but I didn’t end up taking a class with him. I’ve seen him at various poetry readings over the years, but never heard him read before. I graduated in 1996, so not sure we had classes together. @Tara Mae, Rogers won the Starrett prize in 2009.

Since I know two of the poets, sounds like I’ll have to drag the husband out to a poetry reading on Saturday night, though not sure I can convince him to stay for three hours. All of the other readings I’ve dragged him to were only about one hour in length. I think his favorite was the Billy Collins reading, the others not so much.
