Poetry events in Memphis!

For you poetry-hungry Memphis folks, check out one or both of these great poetry events in town this week.

 

TODAY:

Mary Leader will be reading at the University of Memphis in the University Center River Room (Room 300) at 8pm this evening. Free and open to the public. A book signing will follow.

SATURDAY:

As part of 100 Thousand Poets for Change, poets Heather Dobbins-Combs, Bobby Rogers, Whit Griffin, Corey Mesler, Mary Burns, and John Reed will be reading from 6:30-9:30 P.M. at Java Cabana Coffeehouse, 2170 Young Avenue. This event will have a $5 suggested donation. All funds benefit the Lowenstein House.

  1. Ah, I’ve had a copy of Paper Anniversary for Rogers to sign since last year! Great work, and wonderful to read a poet who writes about this area.

    @Renee, Rogers was teaching when I was at Union, but I didn’t end up taking a class with him. I’ve seen him at various poetry readings over the years, but never heard him read before. I graduated in 1996, so not sure we had classes together. @Tara Mae, Rogers won the Starrett prize in 2009.

    Since I know two of the poets, sounds like I’ll have to drag the husband out to a poetry reading on Saturday night, though not sure I can convince him to stay for three hours. All of the other readings I’ve dragged him to were only about one hour in length. I think his favorite was the Billy Collins reading, the others not so much.
